The 2024 State of the Profession report presents a comprehensive picture of architectural practice in Zambia, drawing on membership data, practice surveys, and sector consultations. Membership has grown steadily, with registered architects now practising across all ten provinces, though concentration remains highest in Lusaka and the Copperbelt.

The report identifies persistent challenges — including the informal practice of architecture, fee undercutting, and limited uptake of digital tools — alongside emerging opportunities in housing, infrastructure, and heritage. It concludes with recommendations for strengthening regulation, expanding CPD, and supporting the next generation of practitioners.

These guidelines provide architects with practical, context-specific guidance for designing affordable housing that is climate-appropriate, culturally responsive, and economically viable across urban and peri-urban Zambia. They cover site planning, unit typologies, material selection, and cost-control strategies.

Particular attention is given to incremental housing models — homes designed to expand as household resources allow — and to the use of locally available materials that reduce construction cost without compromising durability. The guidelines include worked examples and reference designs for typical plot sizes found in Zambian housing schemes.

Zambia spans three distinct climate zones — the cool highland plateau, the warm low-lying valleys, and the hot lowland regions — each demanding different passive design responses. This research maps the zones in detail and presents evidence-based strategies for orientation, shading, thermal mass, and natural ventilation tailored to each.

The paper draws on field measurements, vernacular precedents, and contemporary case studies to demonstrate that buildings designed in response to their climate zone can achieve thermal comfort with minimal mechanical cooling. It includes design decision trees and a checklist architects can apply at concept stage.

As Zambia's secondary cities — Ndola, Kitwe, Kabwe, and Livingstone among them — experience renewed growth, this framework sets out policy recommendations to ensure that architectural practice keeps pace with urban expansion. It addresses planning controls, building standards, and the role of architects in shaping compact, walkable, and economically vibrant city centres.

The framework recommends coordinated investment in public realm design, the adoption of form-based codes for key corridors, and stronger engagement between ZIA, local authorities, and planning departments. It positions architects as essential contributors to secondary city development, not merely as service providers but as stewards of urban quality.
