Cap 442 of the Laws of Zambia

The Zambia Institute of Architects is constituted under Chapter 442 of the Laws of Zambia, which establishes the legal framework for the regulation and practice of architecture in Zambia.

Registration Requirements

All practicing architects in Zambia must be registered with ZIA in accordance with the Architects Registration Act. This ensures professional standards and protects the public interest.

  • Academic qualifications from recognized institutions
  • Practical experience requirements
  • Professional examination
  • Continuous professional development

Code of Conduct

Registered architects are bound by a professional code of conduct that governs ethical practice, professional competence, and client relationships.

  • Professional integrity and honesty
  • Competence and diligence
  • Confidentiality
  • Conflict of interest management

Disciplinary Procedures

ZIA maintains disciplinary procedures to address professional misconduct and ensure compliance with regulations, protecting both practitioners and the public.

Building Regulations

Architects must comply with national building codes, zoning regulations, and environmental standards in all their professional work.

Additional ZIA Act Provisions

The Zambia Institute of Architects Act, Chapter 442 (Act No. 36 of 1995), establishes ZIA as a body corporate with perpetual succession, a common seal, and the power to sue and be sued. The following provisions supplement the core legal framework above:

  • Functions of the Institute (Section 4): promote the general advancement of architecture; facilitate the acquiring of knowledge in architecture and allied professions; provide for the registration of architects; promote good architectural practice; maintain and improve the standards and conduct of architects; consider allegations of professional misconduct; and do all things incidental or conducive to these functions.
  • Membership Classes (Section 5): corporate, honorary, life, foreign, and student members, each with the rights and obligations set out in the Act.
  • Registration & Licensing: only persons registered by ZIA may legally practise architecture, use the title "architect", or be a partner in a firm offering architectural services. Practising certificates are issued on the recommendation of the Registration Committee.
  • Disciplinary Committee: hears and determines complaints and allegations against members. The Council may cancel or refuse to renew practising certificates where misconduct is established.
  • Offences & Penalties (Section 35): an unregistered person who practises as an architect, uses the title "architect", or is a partner in an architectural firm commits an offence and may be liable to a fine and/or imprisonment.
