Our journey since becoming a statutory body in 1995
Founded in 1954 as the Northern Rhodesia Institute of Architects and renamed at independence in 1964, ZIA became a statutory body on 29 December 1995 through the enactment of the Zambia Institute of Architects Act, Chapter 442 of the Laws of Zambia. The Act established ZIA as a body corporate and transferred regulatory responsibility from the Architects and Quantity Surveyors Registration Board.
Under the Act, ZIA's functions are to promote the general advancement of architecture, facilitate the acquiring of knowledge in architecture and allied professions, provide for the registration of architects, promote good architectural practice, maintain and improve the standards and conduct of architects, and consider allegations of professional misconduct. These functions are exercised by the Council through the Registration, Membership, and Disciplinary Committees.
