Zambian Green Building Principles

Architecture in Zambia must respond to the country's unique climate, ecology, and resource constraints. These principles guide ZIA members toward environmentally responsible practice.

1. Climate-Responsive Design

Optimise building orientation for natural ventilation and minimise solar heat gain.
Use wide overhangs, brise-soleil, and deep verandas to shade openings.
Prioritise cross-ventilation and stack-effect cooling over mechanical air-conditioning.

2. Energy Efficiency

Specify LED lighting and high-efficiency appliances.
Integrate solar water heating and rooftop PV where feasible.
Insulate roofs and walls to reduce thermal transfer.

3. Water Conservation

Design for rainwater harvesting with storage capacity sized to local rainfall data.
Specify low-flow fixtures and dual-flush toilets.
Include permeable paving and bioswales to reduce stormwater runoff.

4. Sustainable Materials

Prioritise locally sourced materials to reduce transport emissions.
Use certified sustainable timber and recycled aggregates.
Avoid materials with high embodied carbon when local alternatives exist.

5. Biodiversity & Landscaping

Preserve existing trees and natural topography where possible.
Specify indigenous, drought-tolerant species for landscaping.
Minimise hard paving and maximise green cover.
